How to Manage Time on Digital SAT Math Module 2: The 3-Pass Desmos Strategy

Why Module 2 Kills Test Scores

If you performed well on Module 1, Bluebook routes you into the Hard Math Module 2. Here, you have 35 minutes to solve 22 questions—an average of 95 seconds per question.

Most students run out of time because they treat questions sequentially: they get bogged down on question 14 or 15 for 4 minutes, panic, and guess blindly on the final five questions.

Here is the exact 3-Pass Triage System used by top 1% scorers.

The 3-Pass Triage System

[Pass 1: 0 - 15 min]  --> High Speed Sweep (Qs 1-12, 18-20)
[Pass 2: 15 - 28 min] --> Desmos Power Sweep (Qs 13-17, 21-22)
[Pass 3: 28 - 35 min] --> Hard Boss Problems & Final Double-Check

Pass 1: The High-Speed Sweep (0–15 min)

• Complete every question that has an immediate solution path.
• Flag and skip any item that stalls you; difficulty placement varies by test form, so do not rely on a fixed question-number shortcut.
• If a question requires more than 60 seconds of manual work without an obvious path, flag it, click a placeholder guess, and move on immediately.

Pass 2: The Desmos Power Sweep (15–28 min)

• Return to flagged questions.
• Look for opportunities to turn algebraic equations into visual intersections:
• Systems of equations $\rightarrow$ Type both lines, click intersection coordinates.
• Quadratics with unknown parameter $k$ $\rightarrow$ Add slider $k$, move until tangent to $y=0$.
• Mean/Median/Standard Deviation tables $\rightarrow$ Paste table data directly into Desmos list.

Pass 3: The Hard Boss Questions (28–35 min)

• You should now have 2 to 3 remaining high-difficulty questions and 7 minutes on the clock.
• Work through them with zero panic because 19 questions are already locked in and verified.

The Golden Pacing Rules

1. Never spend > 2.5 minutes on a single question on the first pass.
2. Never leave any question blank. (No negative penalty on the Digital SAT).
3. Double-check units: If the question asks for $2x + 5$ or "minutes instead of hours", underline it before typing into the response box.
